Day 104: BIN FIND OF THE YEAR. Ok, I know this makes me a scabby bastard, but y’know what, I really don’t mind…! The Body Shop is having a re-fit, so have binned ALL their samples. I initially saw a bin bag full of nifty flip lid glass jars which would be perfect for crafts, then realised there were almost full bottles of awesome stuff, so I grabbed a load. There’s more than this in my bathroom too.

After playing an amazing set, with an all female band, with her playing guitar and bass and singing and dancing and telling funny anecdotes and being completely charming, she talked about the girls rock camp work she does where she goes into schools and helps and encourages girls to learn to play instruments and form bands so they can play at gig, and how women and girls should feel entitled to form bands and make music and perform, and how it’s ok to be shy, or quiet or angry and you can still do it. And given I was one of the older people in the room, and have already played in bands for years, I can only imagine how inspiring it must have been to have been a teenager hearing her say that (cos it was a 14+ gig, and there looked to be a lot of teenagers there).

And then she played “underestimate the girl” as the last song, and she got the Tuts who had played first to climb on stage, and then she just kept getting more and more teenage girls to climb on stage with her until the stage was full of her and her band and all these girls dancing and singing and and they all looked like they were having such a great time and I was just crying and crying because it was so amazing to go to a gig where the bands were all entirely female line-ups, and to hear a female musician telling all the women in the audience they could do it too, and to see her be having such an obviously good time, and wanting to get as many of the people as possible who allowed her to keep doing what she loved by coming to her gigs up there on stage with her.

And the whole time she looked fucking stunning like some gorgeous high femme beauty with diamond fake eyelashes and this diamond headpiece, and a red dress and red lipstick and she was just perfect.

And the Tuts, who were on tour with her, were great too. I had their EP already, and had been wanting to see them since I first heard about them on tumblr, and they were really good fun and seemed so happy to be performing together, and they had this kind of youthful exuberance that I guess was just that!

I just really feel like it was the best gig I have ever been to.

I fully agree with pretty much all of this, I was one of the older folks in the audience too. Last time I saw her it was before Girl Talk came out at the Brudenell, and everyone was expecting a piano pop princess and if I’m honest the crowd was fucking frosty and REALLY not getting it and clearly weren’t aware, or fans of, riot grrrl. And that crowd was full of teenage girls who GET IT. And it was amazing. It was awesome to be in a non bro-space, where the crowd sings along to P!nk and Destiny’s Child along with the pre-show music. I just kept thinking, these kids are SO lucky, they are living through the kind of riot grrrl gig I read about and was inspired by as a teenager. Everyone was just having so much fun and it was amazing.

(So I got on stage and had a little dance =] )

Kate Nash is the queen of UK pop punk riot grrrl and will save the world.

I just remembered my excessively traumatising dream from last night. It was that I had to make a giant macaron polar bear sculpture. Sure! I can do that! I had to deliver it to someone in a Leeds suburb, and I got there and the whole place was haunted and just felt wrong and deeply disturbing. I got to the door and as I rang the doorbell I thought OH NO not only have I not got the polar bear with me, I haven’t even started it. A slightly creepy nerd opens the door and I apologise, and he says it’s ok, to bring it back later, and he tells me about his warhammer and pokemon, and I leave and say I’ll be back later, knowing that later it’ll be dark and I’ll be more scared and deeply unsettled about being in that place. I get home and start getting everything ready and realise that I thought I’d ordered a giant polystyrene polarbear and I hadn’t. I had a tiny plastic one the size of my thumb nail. Right royal cock up. I still try and make it and the macarons are crumbling and it’s not happening, and at the same time Rob and Elisa are calling me and asking me where I am. It was our prom or someones wedding or something, something really important and I’m wearing a fancy dress and I keep getting angry at them and telling them that I’ll be there in a few hours and I JUST NEED TO DO THIS and they’re telling me I’m a bad gf/friend and I’m feeling horrible and then I wake up. WHAT. What is happening to my brain. Maybe that’s why I’ve been so tired all day.
