Blog of a veggie lady who can't stay in one place for too long, loves to dumpster dive, loves to craft and can rant about feminism for hours! Just little notes and photos from my travels and the qwirky, fun, arty and ridiculous things I've seen! (and things I've found in bins.)
Then we got back to Helsinki and THIS had happened randomly off the main street, which was a pretty fun surprise. I love random surprise free art stuff.
So then I took a few weeks out to go travelling! It was all planned before I was put into group work and thought I’d be doing individual work, so it put a bit of a spanner in the works for my uni work! But I had my lovely friend David coming over from England to visit. We started off in Helsinki and stayed with Juha, my favorite Helsinki resident! We went to some parties and did a lot of drinking as we usually do with him. After convincing David that Helsinki really is the most uninspiring capital city ever, we moved on to Turku. I’ve been to Turku before twice and wasn’t a big fan. But we couch surfed with this fantastic guy called Samu. He met us from the train station and took us to his house, it was just gorgeous! An old Summerhouse with no right angles and lots of little quaint bits!
Our Finnish friends Joona and Susanna drove us to Susanna’s Mum’s for the night and we got to see her home town and meet her lovely family. Her sister has a big farm house in the middle of nowhere, just surrounded by silence and snow and trees with a sauna, it was just beautiful!
Then we went back to Helsinki to visit our friend Juha! Because he’s fantastic and told us that when we realise there’s nothing in Kuopio we were always welcome back XD To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Helsinki and prefer Kuopio. Helsinki’s a let down of a capital, all the shops close at 3 on a Saturday and it’s strangely sleepy and not such a buzzing city. But was fantastic to see Juha and his friends and the nightlife is good fun!
We found an amazing and bizarre shop called Helsinki 10, which was full of bizarre gifts and strange avant garde clothing. The shop was decorate with all different objects painted matt which and plastered to the walls.
We also found an amazing wool shop which I got pretty obsessed with!
We went with Juha to the Hare Krishna temple for food, which was amazing, all vegetarian and so flavourful! I’m going to get some recipe’s asap!
We went to a bar which had a DJ who looked like an 80’s geography teacher, and sat with Juha and his friends and a sketchbook drawing away! I need to get myself a drinking sketchbook again, the results are always amazing! The result of this was a drawing of the very drunk man opposite me as a lion tamer (he loved it and wanted me to email it to him!), a very bizarre map of England and a fold over story about god knows what!
Then we saw people sledging down the road at 3am while we waited for a taxi =]
So now I’m in Finland! I’ve been here nearly a month and I’m settling in well. The Finnish are really fantastic, honest, generous people. And everything here is much softer, everything is very calm and gentle! It’s quite hard to describe! When we first got here we couch surfer with a guy called Juha who’s great fun, we went to stay with him last weekend too. I’ve got a lot of photos to post, so this first set is just of some good things I’ve seen in the Helsinki Design District. The first picture is my favorite, it’s a pillow with poppers, so you can attach different bits to it!!!
